News:

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the proposal of the Department of Rural Development for “Implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana - IV (PMGSY-IV) during FY 2024-25 to 2028-29”.

PMGSY I, launched in 2000 and PMGSY II, launched in 2013 was scheduled to be completed by September 2022.  As of January 2023, 96% of the target was achieved for PMGSY I and 97% for PMGSY II. Phase 3 was launched in 2019.

Ok, first understand why this scheme was launched?

An All-weather Road is one which is negotiable in all seasons of the year. This implies that the road-bed is drained effectively (by adequate cross-drainage structures such as culverts, minor bridges and causeways), but this does not necessarily imply that it should be paved or surfaced

or black-topped. Interruptions to traffic as per permitted frequency and duration may

be allowed.

If you see recent data on Yojana:

Habitations under PMGSY are based on the 2001 Census.

It started as 100 percent centrally sponsored scheme, but:

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development.
