Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats
News:
The Cabinet in its meeting held on September 11, approved continuation of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats for the 15th Finance Commission cycle for an overall outlay of Rs. 2602.98 crores.
Subcomponents of IDWH:
- Project Tiger: It was launched in India in 1973 with the primary objective to protect and conserve tiger populations in their natural habitats to prevent extinction. Project Cheetah is part of this component.
- Project Elephant: It was launched in 1992 to address the decline in the elephant population due to habitat loss and poaching.
- Development of Wildlife Habitat: It focuses on creating and enhancing habitats to support wildlife conservation and biodiversity. Project Dolphin and Project Lion are under this subcomponent.
The Project Tiger and Project Elephant Scheme has been merged from FY 2023-24 and now known as Project Tiger & Elephant.
Recovery programmes for saving critically endangered species:
So far, 22 species have been identified under the recovery programme. These are the Snow Leopard, Bustard (including Floricans), Dolphin, Hangul, Nilgiri Tahr, Marine Turtles, Dugongs, Edible Nest Swiftlet, Asian Wild Buffalo, Nicobar Megapode, Manipur Brow-antlered Deer, Vultures, Malabar Civet, Indian Rhinoceros, Asiatic Lion, Swamp Deer, Jerdon’s Courser, the Northern River Terrapin, Clouded Leopard, Arabian Sea Humpback Whale, Red Panda and Caracal.
