National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)

The Convention on Biological Diversity calls for each Party to develop a National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) to guarantee that the objectives of the Convention are fulfilled in each country (Article 6).

The NBSAP Forum is a global partnership aiming to support countries in implementing the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its strategic plans, including global biodiversity targets.

To achieve this, CBD Parties are required to develop and implement national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs), including national targets, and integrate them into relevant sectoral and cross-sectoral plans, programs, and policies, and submit national reports (NRs) on the effectiveness of measures taken to implement the NBSAP. 

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) host the NBSAP Forum, in partnership, through funding provided by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).

India has submitted three National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which include:

India became a Party to the CBD in 1993.
