The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has developed a compact and affordable device aimed at the early detection of breast cancer, particularly for women in rural and remote areas. The device, is designed to identify breast cancer in its early stages, potentially saving lives through timely diagnosis.
The innovative device operates on the principle of Photoacoustic Spectral Response (PASR), which utilizes a combination of optical and acoustic signals to detect abnormal changes in tissue.
According to an institute official, the device is expected to be available at a cost that is about one-tenth of current traditional diagnostic methods once commercialized, making it significantly more accessible.
As per the institute, the device's core capability lies in its ability to differentiate between cancerous and non-cancerous tissues.
Using a compact pulsed laser diode (PLD) to generate light, the device interacts with the tissue, analyzing the response to detect whether the tissue is normal, benign, or malignant.
