A high-level Indian delegation, led by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, participated in Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) 2024 in Manila, Philippines. The conference under the theme “Surge to 2030: Enhancing ambition in Asia Pacific to accelerate disaster risk reduction”.

The APMCDRR is the main platform in Asia and the Pacific to monitor, review and enhance cooperation for the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 at the regional level.

We will learn about the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (Sendai Framework) was the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda and provides Member States with concrete actions to protect development gains from the risk of disaster.

There is one more body, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

The UNDRR is a UN agency responsible for coordinating international efforts to reduce disaster risks. It works globally to build resilience against natural and human-made hazards.

UNDRR is the primary agency responsible for supporting the implementation of the Sendai Framework. It helps countries and regions align their disaster risk reduction strategies with the goals and priorities set out in the framework.

In short, the Sendai Framework is the international guideline for disaster risk reduction from 2015 to 2030, while UNDRR is the UN office that supports the implementation and progress monitoring of this framework.

India is one of the few countries with dedicated financial provisions for DRR through institutional mechanisms and the 15th Finance Commission of India has allocated USD 30 billion for the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) and State Disaster Risk Management Fund (SDRMF) for the financial cycle 2021-22 to 2025-26.
