BRICS nations: Fossil fuels to drop under 50% by end of 2024 for first time

The share of power capacity in the BRICS group fuelled by coal, oil, and gas could fall below 50% by the end of this year.

Three important points from the above image:
Coal has the largest share of total power capacity in three of these countries: China 41%, India 51% and South Africa 70%.
Oil and gas plants are dominant in Russia 47%, Egypt 89%, Iran 84%, and United Arab Emirates 77%.
Hydropower is the dominant power source in Brazil and Ethiopia, accounting for 49% and 87% of total capacity, respectively.

The BRICS countries are also accelerating their renewable energy development. Wind and utility-scale solar projects under construction or in planning stages now total 1,550 GW — more than double the capacity of fossil fuel projects in the pipeline.
