The Global Family Farming Forum was launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). These two UN agencies play a key role in promoting family farming worldwide, particularly under the UN Decade of Family Farming (2019-2028) initiative.

FAO’s definitions of family farming:

Labour is a key asset for family farms.

FAO adopted these definitions of family farms during the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) in 2014.
