News:
The Kartarpur Corridor Agreement is a pact between India and Pakistan that allows Indian pilgrims to travel to the Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan without a visa.
The agreement was signed on October 24, 2019, and was renewed in October 2024 for an additional five years, until 2029.
The agreement was created to make it easier for pilgrims to visit the gurdwara, which is a holy site for Sikhs. The corridor connects the Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan's Narowal district to the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India's Gurdaspur district.
The corridor is located on the east bank of the Ravi River, about 1 kilometer from the Indo-Pakistan border.
- The agreement includes the following provisions:
- Visa-free travel: Indian pilgrims can travel to the gurdwara without a visa.
- Service charge: Pilgrims are required to pay a service charge of $20, though India has urged Pakistan to waive this fee.
Pilgrim quota: Pakistan limits the number of pilgrims allowed to visit to 5,000 per day.
The Kartarpur Corridor was built to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.
Guru Nanak Dev preached at Kartarpur for the last 18 years of his life.
