FSSAI Lists Packaged Drinking Water as “Highest Risk Food Category”
Current Affair 1:
News:
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to treat the packaged drinking and mineral water segment as a “High Risk Food Category” and subject it to mandatory inspection and third-party audit norms.
The reclassification by the FSSAI follows recent amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, which previously removed mandatory BIS certification requirements for certain food products.
In simple terms, "High Risk Food Categories" are foods that are more likely to cause health problems if not handled or produced properly. These products will now undergo more regular inspections and third-party audits to ensure they meet safety standards.
Previously, the water industry had sought simpler rules, asking for the removal of the need for both FSSAI and BIS certifications. The new rules will reduce the compliance burden for manufacturers while ensuring better safety for consumers.
