Current Affair 1:
Management Effectiveness Evaluation of Tiger Reserves: Fifth cycle

 

Read introduction:

The MEE exercise, adopted from International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources' (IUCN's) World Commission on Protected Areas framework, has emerged as the most significant approach to help and enhance the management perspectives of Tiger Reserves and their associated landscape connectivity.

For assessment of each of the six elements of the MEE Framework, 33 criteria (Table 2) have been developed for MEE of Tiger Reserves in India.

Current Affair 2:
All India Tiger Estimation -2022

 

In 1973, Project Tiger was established with the objective of utilizing tiger’s functional role and charisma to garner public support and resources for preserving representative ecosystems. Since its inception, the project has expanded from nine tiger reserves covering 18,278 km2 to 53 reserves covering 75,796 km2, which accounts for 2.3% of India’s land area.

India currently harbors almost 75% of the world’s wild tiger population.

The tiger abundance within the Tiger Reserve is highest in Corbett (260), followed by Bandipur (150), Nagarhole (141), Bandhavgarh (135), Dudhwa (135), Mudumalai (114), Kanha (105), Kaziranga (104), Sundarbans (100), Tadoba (97), Sathyamangalam (85), and Pench-MP (77).

Corbett: Tiger density was estimated at 14.65 (SE 0.92) tiger per 100 km2. It is one of the highest density tiger populations in the world which is a source of tigers in the larger landscape.

Current Affair 3:
Sangeet Natak Akademi

 

Sangeet Natak Akademi, the apex body in the field of performing arts in the country, was set up in 1953 for the preservation and promotion of the vast intangible heritage of India’s diverse culture expressed in forms of music, dance and drama.

It was created by a resolution of the (then, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad) Ministry of Education, Government of India, dated 31 May 1952, which was notified in the Gazette of India of June 1952. The Akademi became functional the following year, with the appointment of its first Chairman, Dr P.V. Rajamannar.

The first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad, inaugurated it on 28 January 1953.

The management of the Akademi vests in its General Council. The Chairman of the Akademi is appointed by the President of India for a term of five years.

Sangeet Natak Akademi now has three constituent units, two of these being dance-teaching institutions: the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) at Imphal, and Kathak Kendra in Delhi.

Sangeet Natak Akademi is an autonomous body of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and is fully funded by the Government for implementation of its schemes and programmes.

UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment

The UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+2) on 24-26 July 2023 in Rome, Italy, saw countries convene to review progress on the commitments made during the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit.

The UNFSS+2 was a pivotal moment in our shared journey toward sustainable food systems and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
