Current Affair 1:
Role of Green Leaf Volatiles (GLVs)

News:

The interaction between damaged plants and the environment occurs by means of the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which provide signals to influence neighbouring plants.

Thus, the VOCs released by plants have certain key ecological functions. They participate in plant-to-plant communication and have an impact on the growth, disease resistance, dormancy, enzyme activity, photosynthesis, respiration, and the content of reactive oxygen species. They can also be used to enhance weed biological control.

The largest group of such VOCs are terpenes, comprising isoprene, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes. Isoprene is associated with combatting abiotic stress, while the mono- and sesqui-terpenes are primarily responsible for chemical plant-to-plant communication.

Within the VOCs there is a group of chemical compounds called the green leaf volatiles (GLVs) that are produced constantly at low levels by almost all unstressed plants, and immediately in high levels during mechanical damage and under biotic and abiotic stresses.

Current Affair 2:
First detection of radiation from extra-galactic black hole source

News:

Scientists from U. R. Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) of ISRO and Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) have detected radiation from an extra-galactic black hole source, which has never been done before.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, radiation emitted from the vicinity of an extragalactic black hole located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a small companion galaxy to the Milky Way, has been detected for the first time through a technique called X-ray polarimetry, paving the way for understanding the underlying physical processes around black hole sources.

LMC X-3 is a binary system that consists of a black hole and a normal star that is much hotter, bigger, and more massive than the Sun.

Current Affair 3:
Scientists fabricate 2D protein monolayer that can help to study diseases like Amyloidosis

News:

A 2D protein monolayer was fabricated by scientists by assembling lysozyme molecules -- model protein in studying diseases like Amyloidosis.

WHAT IS AMYLOIDOSIS?

Amyloidosis is a disease in which there is a build-up of protein, called amyloid, around organs.

The protein synthesis in this disease is abnormal. The proteins are misfolded and misaligned because of that they cannot be cleared by the normal mechanisms of the body.

This amyloid buildup can affect the working of organs like heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, nervous system and digestive tract.

Lysozyme, a protein present in mucosal secretions and a principal component of airway fluid can be regarded as a model protein in studying diseases like Amyloidosis which ultimately leads to multi-organ dysfunction.

Current Affair 4:
National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOS DCP)

Indian Coast Guard is the Central Coordinating Authority in India for matters related to Oil Spill.

National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP) promulgated by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is the apex plan for responding to oil spill disasters in Indian waters and is applicable to shipping, ports, and oil industries.

As per NOSDCP, Oil pollution preparedness and response requirements are categorized into three ‘tiers’ i.e. Tier 1, Tier 2 & Tier 3.
