India’s Navy Day is celebrated every December 4th. But why do we celebrate Navy Day on December 4th?
Well, it’s because of a remarkable operation on this very day in 1971.
Operation Trident was a daring naval offensive that crippled Pakistan’s Karachi Harbor. The operation was carried out by a squadron of Indian Navy ships that included missile boats and anti-submarine corvettes.
The operation earned several awards, including the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest gallant award for the operation’s commandant, Commander (and later Commodore) BB Yadav.
Since 1972, Navy Day has been celebrated to honor this victory and the Indian Navy’s role in protecting our nation’s interests.

On December 4, 1971, the task group for the operation consisted of three Vidyut class missile boats, INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer, escorted by two anti-submarine Arnala class corvettes, INS Kiltan and INS Katchall, and a fleet tanker, INS Poshak.
The success of the attack was also attributable to the weak opposition offered by the Pakistani Navy.
