News:
This rule is designed to make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions or other recurring services. It mandates that businesses must provide a cancellation process that is as simple as the process used for signing up.
This applies broadly to sellers using "negative option" practices, where a consumer’s inaction is interpreted as agreement to continue a service.
The rule also requires businesses to avoid misrepresenting key information, to clearly inform consumers before obtaining billing details, and to secure explicit consent before charging for recurring services.
The majority of the rule's provisions will take effect 180 days after their publication in the Federal Register.
