United Nations Day

Current Affair 1:

News:

United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter.

With the ratification of this founding document by most of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

The predecessor of the United Nations was the League of Nations, established in 1919, after World War I, under the Treaty of Versailles "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security."

As of 20 April 1946, the League of Nations ceased to exist, having handed over all its assets to the United Nations.

About UN:

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

All UN Member States are members of the General Assembly.

How a new member is admitted?

In the United Nations (UN), the process for admitting a new member state involves two main bodies: the Security Council and the General Assembly. Here’s how it works:

Security Council Recommendation:

First, the Security Council reviews the application. For a recommendation to pass, at least nine of the fifteen Security Council members must vote in favor, and none of the five permanent members (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China) can veto it.

General Assembly Decision:

If the Security Council approves the application, it then goes to the General Assembly. The General Assembly votes on the recommendation, and a two-thirds majority is required for the state to be admitted as a member.

Only after both the Security Council and the General Assembly approve can a country become a UN member.

What about Secretary General?

The Secretary-General is the head of the Secretariat.

Bodies of United Nations:

The main bodies of the United Nations are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat.

All were established under the UN Charter when the Organization was founded in 1945.
